Our History
I first began collecting surgical data for corneal transplants using the first computer spreadsheet program called “Visicalc” which was run on an Apple I+ computer in 1980. In 1983 I began to enter radial keratotomy data into the same program, but when Microsoft introduced Exceltm in 1986, all of the data was entered into this new exciting program.
The introduction of Automated Lamellar Keratoplasty in 1986 created new challenges for data analysis. More features and more sophisticated analyses were required. Although Exceltm was able to perform many of the needed functions, the process was tedious and repetitive. In 1990, the first version of FileMakerProtm was released. This preprogrammed database permitted many of the analyses I needed as well as offered many new ways to examine data. I was able to easily transfer the data from the spreadsheet to the new database and from there I began to write my first database program. I showed the program to several refractive surgeons who encouraged me to make improvements and to consider creating a public database solution.
Version 1.0 of Outcomes Analysis Software was released in 1996. It came on four floppy disks and had about 100 fields for analysis. Version 2.0 was released in 1998. Soon it became clear that more sophisticated programming was needed. I took two courses in programming and at one of the courses I met John Osborn who was my instructor. He was (and still is) considered to be one of the most talented programmers for FileMakerPro. By that time, the FileMakerProtm was in its version 3.0. I became friends with John and soon he helped produce my version of Outcomes Analysis Software v3.0 in 2000. He quickly improved the user interface and made many suggestions to improve the analyses. Version 3.1 was an improvement, but the major change came with the release of v3.5 in 2001 (see chart that compares features of the different versions).
The next major release was v3.9 in 2002. It still used v4.0 of FilemakerProtm, but added many new features. This version was the most successful one to date and was sold to the most users of all previous versions. The release of the competitive program, the Refractive Surgery Consultant stimulated me to further improve the program.
This v4.0 of Outcomes Analysis Software contains major changes over all previous versions. It runs on FileMakerPro v7.0. A new and easy to use user interface makes data entry simpler. We have added 20 more charts including a radar plot of induced astigmatism. Regression analysis was added to automatically and continually study and

improve visual and refractive outcomes. This program is the only one that automatically performs an analysis of wavefront guided laser surgery. Most importantly, it can study and analyze ANY surgical procedure that changes the refractive error of the eye (LASIK, PRK, Phakic IOLs, cataract procedures, multifocal IOLs, CK, Intacts). The fields can be edited so any new procedures, instruments, or complications can easily be entered. By increasing the Custom Find layouts and fields, the user can analyze ANY combination of factors. All reports have been improved. On line help has been added to every layout. More movies of the program in action help the user see exactly how to use the program.
2006 marks the 10th year for Outcomes Analysis Software making it the only program with such longevity. We strive to improve the program as we have incorporated many suggestions from our users. Today the program ships on a CD and is 250 MB in size or over 1,000 times larger than our first version. More than 1,000 fields are in use compared to the initial 100 fields. The current program has more advantages and features than any of the currently available programs combined!
